Deanna Robertson 10-14-13 SCI220 Dr. Robert Allen What is nutrition? Why is nutrition essential to our daily lives? According to Wardlaw and Smith (2011) â€Å"Nutrition is the science that links foods to health and disease. It includes the processes by which the human organism ingests, digests, absorbs, transports, and excretes food substances† in which the body needs to be able to function each day. Each individual has their own nutritional needs that will enable them to stay healthy and deal with disease. Healthy nutrition can also help an individual with their different levels of activities, and how their brain functions through tasks. What is the connection between nutrition and health? The†¦show more content†¦These are also in addition to the hope that one is also eating a healthy, well-balanced, nutritious diet each day. Where might you find dietary recommendations? What are RDA’s and DRI’s? One can find dietary recommendations from a multitude of sources but the two most common sites would be Health.gov and usda.org in their dietary guidelines sections. The recommended dietary allowances (RDA) is based on meeting an individual’s nutritional needs depending on their age, and gender. Whereas â€Å"the development of DRI’s is an ongoing, collaborative effort between the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine in the United States and Health Canada† (Wardlaw Smith. 2011). Dietary recommendations can all be found at the healthierus.gov and/or usda.org. What is the MyPlate diagram and why should someone study it? The diagram titled MyPlate was designed so that people could actually see what their plates should look like with a well-balanced meal. Following the USDA standards one can study and use this diagram as a guide when planning their own individual meals. In following these guidelines one can also start to become more aware of what one puts into their body each day, consume smaller portions, feel full longer, and will have little to no energy lags.
